Every June, someone asks a version of the same question: "I bought a desk fan and it just moves hot air around, it's not actually cooling anything." They're half right. A small USB fan will never lower your room's temperature. Whether that means it's useless depends on physics most of us never think about.
Why Kathmandu Rooms Feel Worse Than the Thermometer Says
Kathmandu's peak mosquito and humidity season runs June through August, with humidity typically between 60% and 78% and temperatures regularly above 27°C. On top of that, Kathmandu's air quality has been genuinely bad — PM2.5 levels hit 384 µg/m³ in 2025, more than 25 times the WHO safe limit, with the Ring Road stretch between Kalanki and Gongabu among the worst-exposed areas. The practical result: a lot of people keep their windows shut most of the day, even in warm months, because opening them means letting in dust and vehicle exhaust. That traps heat and humidity indoors with nowhere to go.
What a Fan Actually Does to Your Body
A fan does not cool air. It moves it. The cooling you feel comes from two separate effects, and it matters which one you're relying on:
Convective heat loss
Your skin is almost always slightly warmer than the surrounding air. Still air around your body warms up and forms an insulating layer, slowing further heat loss. Moving air constantly replaces that warmed layer with cooler air, so your body keeps losing heat instead of stalling out. This works even if the air itself is warm, as long as it's cooler than your skin — which is nearly always true.
Evaporative cooling
Sweat cools you as it evaporates off your skin. Still, humid air is already close to saturated with moisture, so sweat evaporates slowly and the cooling effect is weak. Moving air speeds up evaporation by constantly clearing the humid air layer right at your skin and replacing it with drier air from elsewhere in the room. This is the effect that weakens as humidity climbs — at 60-78% it's noticeably less effective than in dry heat, but it isn't zero.
So Is It Placebo in Kathmandu's Humidity, or Not?
Not placebo — but the expectation needs correcting. At Kathmandu's typical monsoon humidity and temperature range, a fan pointed directly at you can still produce a real, felt cooling effect of a few degrees on your skin, purely from convective heat loss, even when evaporative cooling is working at reduced efficiency. What a fan will never do is bring down the room's actual air temperature — it has no way to remove heat, only to move it around. If your room measures 31°C, it stays 31°C whether the fan is on or off. What changes is how fast your body loses heat to that air.
Where a Small Desk Fan Genuinely Helps (and Where It Doesn't)
- Helps: personal cooling at a desk, aimed directly at you, especially during humid afternoons when windows stay closed for air-quality reasons
- Helps: speeding up sweat evaporation during work, even partially, which reduces that sticky, sluggish feeling
- Doesn't help: cooling an entire room — that needs airflow exchange (open windows, exhaust fan, or AC), not just air movement within a closed space
- Doesn't help: extreme heat plus extreme humidity together (not really a Kathmandu issue, but worth knowing) — once the air is close to your skin temperature and fully saturated, moving it does almost nothing
For most WFH and freelance setups in Kathmandu — a closed room, a desk, and hours in front of a screen — that first category is exactly the situation a small fan is built for.
What We'd Actually Recommend
We carry two small desk fans built for this: a high-speed cooling fan (Rs 499) and a portable high-speed fan (Rs 300). Neither will cool your room. Both will noticeably cool you, aimed directly at your desk, for less than the cost of a single restaurant meal. That's the honest pitch — not a room air conditioner replacement, a very cheap fix for the specific problem of sitting still in humid, closed-window air for eight hours a day.
