I once compared a palm-sized speaker advertised with "enhanced deep bass" against a bookshelf speaker roughly four times its volume, expecting the marketing to have closed most of the gap. It hadn't. The small speaker sounded fuller than its size suggested, but the actual low end simply wasn't there the way it was on the bigger unit, no matter how the settings were adjusted.
Why Size Genuinely Limits Bass, Not Just Marketing Copy
Low frequencies have long wavelengths, a 50Hz note measures roughly 6.8 meters, and producing them efficiently requires moving a real volume of air. A small driver, physically limited in how far it can move and how much air it can displace, simply can't reproduce those wavelengths the way a larger driver in a larger cabinet can. This isn't a design failure engineers overlooked. It's a hard physical constraint tied directly to driver size and enclosure volume.
What DSP Actually Does, and Where It Runs Out
Manufacturers use digital signal processing to boost the frequencies a small driver can still reach, making the overall sound feel fuller than the raw hardware would produce on its own. That's a real technique with a real effect at moderate volume. Push the volume up, though, and the driver runs out of room to move, and the artificially boosted bass tends to thin out or distort, because DSP can shape what a driver puts out, not expand what it's physically capable of.
The One Genuine Engineering Fix, Not Just Software
Passive radiators, a second driver with no voice coil that moves purely from internal air pressure, are a real hardware solution rather than a processing trick. They let a small enclosure produce noticeably deeper bass than the same size cabinet without one, extending real output rather than just emphasizing what's already there. A speaker with a passive radiator and a speaker relying purely on EQ can look identical from the outside and perform very differently once you push them.
The Honest Verdict
A small Bluetooth speaker can sound genuinely fuller than its size implies, and passive radiators are real engineering, not marketing language. What it can't do is match a larger speaker's actual bass extension, regardless of how the box describes the bass mode, because that's a limit set by driver size and cabinet volume, not by how good the software is. Judge a small speaker on how full it sounds at the volume you'll actually use it at, not on what the spec sheet claims about the low end.
